It must be stressed that Salutation is an Open Architecture. It is not controlled by one or two large companies, but rather by a dedicated group of industry leaders who wish to put discovery and session management behind them so they can focus on bringing rich functionality to their customers.
The Salutation Protocols are nonproprietary. You can get the specification from the Web. You can join the Consortium and participate in further development. And, unlike the reports about Jini, there are no royalty charges associated with implementation of Salutation.
Jini has a dependence on Java to enable all its promise. Salutation can be implemented in Java, or any other language (Windows 95/98/NT and Windriver's Tornado are available, plans are in the works for Windows CE and Palm OS).
Jini and UPnP are targeted for IP networks; Saltation can operate in any network, including IR.
Saltation's light footprint make it a candidate for small devices. Jini has not made inroads here. UPnP is still a question in this space. Again, to meet full potential, Jini and UPnP require a directory of sorts. Salutation is comfortable in directory centric or point-to-point applications.
And while Jini and UPnP are vying for column-inches in trade magazines, Salutation-enabled products are quietly shipping! Implementations of Jini and UPnP are still far off. Saltation is proven in both devices and services, with Software Development Toolkits available from multiple sources.
The Saltation Consortium has no hidden agenda. As we like to say, "What you see is what you get!"
